It’s that time of year again! Buffalo Trace Distillery recently announced the release of their 2017 Antique Collection. Each year this highly anticipated launch features five limited-release expressions.

2017 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection

Eagle Rare 17

Last year’s release was recently awarded a Silver Outstanding Medal at the 2017 International Wine and Spirits Competition. This seventeen-year-old 90 proof bourbon has been aging on the first, second and third floors of Warehouses C, K, and P.  Look for hints of oak, toffee, tobacco, and vanilla.

George T. Stagg

One of the Antique Collection’s most popular, George T. Stagg comes in at 129.2 proof this year. Previous expressions have won several awards including F. Paul Pacault’s, 5 Stars – Highest Recommendation” from The Spirited Journal. This year’s Stagg contains 309 barrels (a jump from last year) and includes bourbon that entered barrels in the spring of 2002. Uncut and unfiltered this bourbon was aged across a variety of Warehouses including, K, C, M, and Q. Look for notes of chocolate fudge, espresso, and tobacco.

William Larue Weller

The Antique Collection’s wheated bourbon has won numerous awards for its expressions over the years, including “Bourbon of the Year” by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 and Double Gold at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Coming in at 128.2 proof this wheated bourbon was distilled in the winter of 2005 and aged in Warehouses D, I, and P. This year’s expression includes nuances of leather, marshmallow, and toffee.

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye

Weighing in at 127.2 proof this straight rye whiskey was distilled in the spring of 2011. Past releases have been awarded titles such as, “World’s Best American Whiskey” by Whisky Magazine and “World Whiskey of the Year” by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. Aged on the third, fourth and fifth floors of Warehouses K, L,  and Q, this year’s edition boasts notes of fig, allspice, and cinnamon.

Sazerac Rye 18

F. Paul Pacault’s The Spirited Journal rated last year’s Sazerac 18 edition as “4 Stars– Highly Recommended,” so it is no surprise that this year’s release has garnered so much anticipation. 2017’s edition comes from barrels that were filled in the spring of 1998 and then moved into stainless steel tanks in 2016 to halt further aging and evaporation. Look for hints of clove, allspice, and leather.

Since its release in 2000, The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection has been a favorite amongst whiskey aficionados. It’s no surprise that each year its expressions are some of the most sought after whiskeys on the market. With a suggested retail price of $90 per bottle look for The Antique Collection this October in stores near you.
