Here’s a new one: An experimental whiskey from A. Smith Bowman is coming up for sale. They’re calling it “the Abraham Bowman Sweet XVI Bourbon,” named after the commander of the 8th Virginia Regiment in the American Revolutionary War.

This limited release is experimental in the sense that the distillery is exploring how barrel entry proof affects their bourbon’s flavor profile over long aging periods. In this case, the Abraham Bowman Sweet has been aged 16 years prior to bottling. What makes it special is the process they took to get there.

Four different entry proofs were first created for this experiment: 125, 114, 105, and 90 proof. Each of these barrel proofs were tested periodically over the 16-year aging period, after which they were combined to create this unique spirit. A. Smith Bowman says the spirit carries a supple sweetness, with flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, and brown spice, with a long finish.

Of course, as with many batches of this sort, the Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Sweet XVI Bourbon will be hard to find. As a limited release, even in its 17th edition, demand will be very high. That’s why A. Smith Bowman is launching a lottery for Virginia residents through the Virginia Alcoholic Beverages Commission. They also offered it for sale in their visitor’s center for one day only, and that day has passed.

However, even more limited amounts of this rarified bourbon are being made available outside of Virginia this summer. The 116-proof bottles retail for just $69.99, so keep your eyes peeled for it.
