A brand-new, very rare bourbon finished with gingerbread and cocoa is coming soon to Virginia stores, courtesy of A. Smith Bowman Distillery.

However, A. Smith Bowman was not the only alcohol purveyor involved in creating such a refined spirit. The beer-making experts at Heywood Park Craft Brewery contributed the gingerbread and cocoa flavors, aging their Gingerbread Stout and Foolery Imperial Milk Stout in Bowman barrels that already housed bourbon for nearly five years.

The result sounds like absolute magic on the tongue.

“This bourbon tastes of ginger, vanilla, and cinnamon topped off with notes of cocoa,” Master Distiller Brian Prewitt said. “The gingerbread spice aroma gives way to caramel and toasty oak and finishes with a smooth and pleasant finish.”

The 90-proof bourbon will be available in extremely limited quantities, each numbered and stamped with the distillation and bottling dates. Known as Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon, the spirit was commissioned in honor of Abraham Bowman, the distillery’s namesake, who served as commander of the 8th Virginia regiment in the Revolutionary War.

As such, most of this very special bourbon will only be available in Virginia, going on sale through the VA ABC Lottery on Sept. 29, and in the A. Bowman visitor’s center on Oct. 1. Other states might see distribution of a very limited number of bottles by mid-October, but don’t hold your breath.

In other words: Do not miss out on this, Virginians. It’s going to be special.
